When you first go to a milonga, you'll notice that music plays in a certain order. After a few songs, completely different music plays, everyone stops, and partners change. This system is tanda and cortina - the heartbeat of the milonga.

Dancing with the same partner throughout a tanda is like completing a conversation. The cortina is saying "thank you for the lovely conversation."

Orchestra Consistency

A good DJ plays songs from the same orchestra within a tanda. This makes it easier for dancers to adapt to the music.

Night Flow

Typical Milonga Program

Throughout a night, tandas rotate like this:

Tango Tanda (4 songs)
Tango Tanda (4 songs)
Vals Tanda (3 songs)
Tango Tanda (4 songs)
Tango Tanda (4 songs)
Milonga Tanda (3 songs)
... (cycle continues)

T-T-V-T-T-M Cycle

Commonly used format:

  • T - Tango
  • T - Tango
  • V - Vals
  • T - Tango
  • T - Tango
  • M - Milonga

This cycle repeats throughout the night.

Cortina Rules

When the Cortina Comes

  1. Dancing stops - Even mid-song
  2. Thank your partner - "Thank you, that was lovely"
  3. Clear the floor - Everyone returns to their table
  4. Change partners - New partner for new tanda

Cortina Music

DJs choose non-tango music for cortinas:

  • Pop songs
  • Jazz
  • Latin music
  • Electronic
  • Anything (except tango!)

Recognizing the Cortina

A cortina usually lasts 20-60 seconds. If the music is completely different and everyone stops and returns to tables, it's a cortina.

Partner Change

Why Different Partners Each Tanda?

  1. Socializing: Meeting more people
  2. Development: Dancing with different styles
  3. Equality: Everyone gets a chance
  4. Tradition: Part of tango culture

Leaving Mid-Tanda

Under normal circumstances: You dance with the same partner until the tanda ends.

Exceptions:

  • Physical discomfort
  • Safety issue
  • Very bad behavior

Note

Leaving your partner mid-tanda is considered rude, especially in milonga culture. It should only be done for serious reasons.

DJ Culture

A Good Tango DJ

  • Knows orchestras well
  • Manages energy flow
  • Observes dancers
  • Maintains tanda integrity
  • Is creative with cortina selection

Energy Management

DJs manage energy throughout the night:

9:00 PM - Slow start (Di Sarli, Canaro)
10:00 PM - Warming up (Troilo, De Angelis)
11:00 PM - Rising (D'Arienzo, Biagi)
12:00 AM - Peak (D'Arienzo, Tanturi)
1:00 AM - Winding down (Pugliese, Di Sarli)

Requesting Songs from the DJ

  • Generally not done
  • Very rare situations (special night, etc.)
  • Respect the DJ's decisions

Tips for Beginners

When a Tanda Starts

  1. Listen to the music (try to recognize the orchestra)
  2. Feel the rhythm before moving
  3. Start with simple steps
  4. Build connection with your partner

Handling the Cortina

  1. Always thank your partner
  2. Walk them back to their seat (traditional)
  3. Return to your own table
  4. Look around for next partner

Conclusion

The tanda and cortina system is what makes a milonga a milonga. It creates structure, encourages socializing, and respects both partners' time. Understanding this system will make your milonga experience much more enjoyable.
